Gulab Jamun Recipe / How to make Gulab jamun / Khoya jamun / Sweet recipes with detailed instruction and step by step photos. Jamun is popular Indian sweet recipe made from milk solids, sugar and cardamom. Gulab jamun is one of the classic sweet and has many variations in it. You can find 3-4 varieties of jamun in a any Indian sweet shops. And It is prepared and enjoyed for all Indian festivals and all other celebrations.

Traditionally gulab jamun is prepared with Khoya (milk solid) however you can also prepare it with milk powder. Today i have shared the gulab jamun recipe made of khoya/mawa. To make gulab jamun we require only 5 ingredients like khoya, all purpose flour / maida, baking powder, sugar and oil to deep fry it. Firstly khoya and maida and knead to dough and deep fried in oil and then soaked in cardamom flavored sugar syrup.

Main Ingredients to make Gulab jamun

To make this gulab jamun we require only few basic ingredients like

Khoya / mawa

All purpose flour / maida

Baking powder

Ghee

Sugar

Cardamom powder

Oil for frying

Few tips to make perfect gulab jamun

  • The dough has to be soft and smooth else it may break while frying 
  • Do not knead the jamun for long time just combine to form a smooth and soft dough
  • Do not add more milk while forming the dough just add it to combine 
  • You can fry the jamun  in ghee for rich taste else you can use half & half  the oil and ghee 
  • Do not skip baking powder as it helps as leavening agent and makes the jamun soft and do not add too much baking powder than mentioned
  • Sugar syrup need not reach 1 string consistency 
  • You can easily double or triple the recipe

To make gulab jamun dough
– Firstly grate the khoya using a grater
– Now add the khoya to make mixing bowl and add all purpose flour / maida
– Add baking powder
– Add cardamom powder and ghee and combine it well
– Now slowly add milk
– Now bring together to make a dough ( do not knead it ) dough should be soft and smooth
– Divide 14-15 equal sized dough and grease hand with ghee or oil and roll it to smooth ball in your palm
– The balls should be smooth without any cracks or any lines else it may crack during frying
To make sugar syrup
– In deep pan take 1 cup and 1/4 water and boil it, need not reach 1 string consistency
– Add cardamom powder, saffron and 2 drops of lemon juice and mix it well and switch of the flame
– Allow it to cool for sometime ( Syrup has be warm while dropping the jamun not too cold)
How to make gulab jamun
– Heat a oil / ghee in kadai on medium flame and drop the jamun one by one ( make sure oil is not very hot else jamun will get browned without cooking inside)
– Fry them in low flame
– Take it out once they turn golden brown
– Allow it rest for 2 minutes and then drop it in sugar syrup and soak it for 30 – 40 minutes

Ingredients
  

To make Gulab Jamun

  • 1 cup Khoya / mawa
  • 1/4 cup All purpose flour / maida
  • 1/4 tsp Baking powder
  • a pinch of Cardamom powder
  • 1/2 tsp Ghee
  • 1-2 tbsp Milk add little at a time
  • To deep fry Oil / ghee

For sugar syrup

  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Cardamom powder
  • Saffron

Instructions
 

To make gulab jamun dough
