Tomato rice recipe / Thakkali sadam / How to make tomato rice / Lunch box recipes with detailed step by step photos. Tomato rice / thakali sadam is popular rice recipe from south Indian cuisine. There are many variations and methods to prepare this recipe. This is very simple one pot dish. Tomato rice / Thakali sadam (thakali means tomato in tamil) goes well in lunch boxes for all. A simple raita, Coconut chutney or papad can compliment the dish well. As the name itself implies its made of many tomatoes and no veggies are added to this. And we add only onion to this.
Tomato rice is very tasty and flavourful dish that can be prepared quickly. As i mentioned there are many ways to make it. Today i will post the very easy method. And in this i had blended the tomato with whole spices and then added. You can also add chopped tomato and spices directly to the oil. This is one pot recipe. And the actual recipe for tomato rice or thakkali sadam is made with cooked rice.
If you have left over rice or cooked rice you can make this in a jiffy just make the masala and add the rice to this and mix it. This is quick lunch box recipe or you can make it quick dinner recipe.
You can add Green peas or other veggies like carrots,beans to this to make it more healthy. You can choose any variety of rice to make this recipe.

Tomato Rice recipe
Ingredients
For Ground paste
- 3 large Tomato
- small Ginger
- 4-5 cloves Garlic
- few Coriander leaves
- 1 Green chili
- 1 tsp Fennel/sombu
- small Cinnamon
To make Tomato rice
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Cumin/jeera
- 1 Bay leaf
- small Cinnamon
- 1 large Onion
- 2 tsp Chili powder
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric
- 1.5 cups Rice
- 3 cups Water
- Salt
Instructions
Tomato paste
- In a blender jar add chopped tomatoes, Coriander leaves, ginger & garlic, fennel and cinnamon and blend it to smooth paste without adding water
To make Tomato Rice
- In a pressure cooker heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin / jeera and bay leaf and let it crackle
- Then add sliced onion and saute them on low flame till it turns translucent
- Add chili powder. coriander powder and turmeric and saute it well
- Now add the ground tomato paste and saute it till it releases oil
- Then add the soaked rice and mix it
- Add the required water and salt and cover it with lid and pressure cook it for 2 whistles on medium flame about 10-12 minutes and switch flame of the flame
- Now fluff up the rice rice with fork and serve hot
- Serve tomato rice with simple coconut chutney or with raita
