Healthy Gooseberry rasam recipe / Amla rasam / Nellika rasam recipe / Quick rasam recipes with detialed instruction and step by step photos. Amla or Indian gooseberries are rich in anti oxidants and are excellent sources of vitamin C and vitamin E. This indian berry has so many health benefits hence this amla berries are used in Ayurveda madicine for many years now. There are lots of dish based on this amla,like amla (nellika in tamil) pickle, amla chutney, raitha and many. Healthy gooseberry rasam is one of the simple recipes from Tamilnadu cuisine. there are many variety of rasam recipes and each household had their own recipe for making rasam.
- Heat a kadai or pan and dry roast the pepper corns. cumin, curry leaves, ginger and toor dal for 3-4 minutes ( If adding ready made rasam powder then skip this step )
- Now add Chopped tomato and chopped gooseberries/ amala and saute it for 3-4 minutes
- Switch of the flame and once it cool downs completely add it to mixer jar and blend it to slightly coarse puree
- Now heat a kadai and add the blended tomato puree and add 1 cup water
- Now add salt and turmeric powder and mix well and bring it to boil and switch of the flame

Ingredients
  

To make rasam

  • 1 tsp Pepper corns
  • 1 tsp Cumin / Jeera
  • 1 tsp Toor dal
  • 1 spring Curry leaves
  • 1 inch Ginger optional
  • 1 medium size Tomato ripen
  • 4 Gooseberries / amla
  • 1 tbsp Cooked and mashed toor dal
  • Salt
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Few Coriander leaves

To temper

  • 2 tsp Ghee / Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin / Jeera
  • 3-4 Garlic cloves
  • 1 Dried red chili

Instructions
 

  • Heat a kadai or pan and dry roast the pepper corns. cumin, curry leaves, ginger and toor dal for 3-4 minutes ( If adding ready made rasam powder then skip this step )
  • Now add Chopped tomato and chopped gooseberries/ amala and saute it for 3-4 minutes
  • Switch of the flame and once it cool downs completely add it to mixer jar and blend it to slightly coarse puree
  • Now heat a kadai and add the blended tomato puree and add 1 cup water
  • Now add cooked and smashed dal to it and mix
  • Now add salt and turmeric powder and mix well and bring it to boil and switch of the flame and add coriander leaves

To temper the gooseberry rasam

  • Heat a tadka pan or kadai with ghee or oil add mustard seeds once it splutters, add garlic and red chili and saute it for 1-2 seconds and add hing and add this tempering to the rasam
  • Serve it hot with rice

Notes

You can skip cooked toor dal in this recipe 
If your using store bought rasam powder then skip adding pepper corn. cumin, toor dal
This rasam recipe does not require tamarind so do not add it.
