Tomato Rice recipe / Thakkali sadam / How to make Tomato rice / Lunch box recipes with detailed step by step photos. Tomato rice / thakkali sadam is popular rice recipe from south Indian cuisine. There are many variations and methods to prepare this recipe. This is very simple one pot dish. Tomato rice / Thakkali sadam (thakkali means tomato in tamil) goes well in lunch boxes for all. A simple raita or papad can compliment the dish well. As the name itself implies it is made of many tomatoes and no veggies are added to this. And we add only onion to this.
Tomato paste
- In a blender jar add chopped tomatoes, Coriander leaves, ginger & garlic, fennel and cinnamon and blend it to smooth paste without adding water
To Tomato sadam
- In a pressure cooker heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin / jeera and bay leaf and let it crackle
- Then add sliced onion and saute them on low flame till it turns translucent
- Add curry leaves, chili powder. coriander powder and turmeric and saute it well
- Now add the ground tomato paste and saute it till it releases oil
- Then add the soaked rice and mix it
- Add the required water and salt and cover it with lid and pressure cook it for 2 whistles on medium flame about 10-12 minutes and switch flame of the flame
-Now fluff up the rice rice with fork and serve hot
-Serve tomato rice with simple coconut chutney or with raita

Ingredients
  

For Ground paste

  • 3 large Tomato
  • small Ginger
  • 4-5 cloves Garlic
  • few Coriander leaves
  • 1 Green chili
  • 1 tsp Fennel/sombu
  • small Cinnamon

To make Tomato rice

  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin/jeera
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • small Cinnamon
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 tsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • 1.5 cups Rice
  • 3 cups Water
  • Salt

Adjust the spices according to your taste
You can also chop the tomatoes and add 
You can cook this with left over rice also
