In this raw banana podimas recipe i have used a freshly ground spice mix which enhance the taste of the podimas. We can make many dishes from vazhakkai / raw banana. Like plain stir fry with grated coconut, vazhakkai varuval(raw banana fry) and many. Raw banana dishes are easy and can be made quickly because raw banana / plantain gets coooked soon.

Raw banana has many health benefits

Coconut oil enhance the taste in this recipe but its not necessary and you can add regular cooking oil.

You can prepare vazhakkai podimas without the spice mix. But i highly recommend using the spices as they are the game changer in the recipe.

While cooking raw banana in boiling water make sure to the flip the banana in intervals so it gets cooked evenly.

Do not over cook the raw banana.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 nos Raw banana
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 2 tsp Urad dal
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 2 spring Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Ginger
  • Salt
  • water to cook the raw banana

To make fresh ground masala

  • 2 tsp Chana dal
  • 2 nos Red chili
  • 1/2 tsp cumin / jeera
  • 1/2 tsp Fennel

Instructions
 

To make ground masala

  • Heat a kadai and dry roast dal, coriander seeds, red chili, cumin, fennel
  • Add the Roasted ingredients to a blender jar and blend it to slightly coarse powder and set it aside

To make Vazhakka podimas

  • Cut the Raw banana / vazhakka in to two big chunks with cutting the top and bottom part
  • Now In a pan boil the water and add raw banana and cook them for 8-10 minutes or it is completely cooked ( flip the raw banana in interval with spatula )
  • Once the banana is cooked allow it cool and peel the skin from cooked raw banana
  • Now grate the cooked raw banana with grater

To Make vazhakka podimas

  • Heat a pan with some coconut oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal and once it crackle add chopped onion, curry leaves and green chili and saute it for 3-4 minutes
  • Now add the grated raw banana / vazhakka, salt and mix it and cook for 2-3 minutes in low medium
  • Now add the ground masala and mix it with raw banana and cook for 1-2 minutes and switch of the flame
  • Finally add grated coconut mix it well
  • Serve it hot with rice
