Red velvet cake is a rich cake frosted with cream cheese and cake got its name because of its vibrant color and this delicious cake has a soft velvety texture.

Red velvet is not a chocolate cake with red color, this cake has soft velvet texture. And it has very mild chocolate flavor in it. And mostly red velvet cakes are frosted with soft classic cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients to make red velvet cake

  • All purpose flour – Traditionally cake flour is used to make red velvet cake but at my place cake flour is not available easily hence i made this cake with combination of corn flour (white powder thing) and all purpose flour this makes cake very like lite
  • Cocoa powder – I have only 1 tbsp of cocoa powder in this recipe ant that is perfect to get the nice color and flavor in this classic red velvet cake
  • Sugar – Just regular white granulated sugar works fine
  • Red food color – I used red professional gel food color but you can also use liquid food color
  • Buttermilk – This helps to activate the baking soda hence do not skip buttermilk and do not substitute milk with buttermilk
  • Vinegar – I used white vinegar but apple cider vinegar works too
  • Butter & Oil – I have used both butter and oil in my recipe to get
  • Cream cheese – Use good quality cream cheese

Easy Red Velvet cake recipe

To make red velvet cake
– Pre heat the oven at 180 degree for 15 minutes
-Sift all purpose flour(maida), corn flour, baking soda and salt then set it aside
-In a large mixing bowl beat butter and sugar with electric beater or with stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment
– Now add oil and beat it again
-Add in eggs one at a time beating in between to combineNote : at this point batter will look like curdled but that okay just continue to beat
– Add vanilla, red food color and vinegar and just beat until combined
– Add half of the dry ingredients and beat until combined. Add buttermilk followed with remaining dry ingredients and beat it ( do not over mix)
– Add the prepared batter into greased cake tin
– Bake it for 40 minutes or till the tooth pick inserted comes out clean
To make cream cheese frosting
– In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese till they are smooth
– Add Icing sugar and beat it till they are light and fluffy
– Now cut the cake into 2 layers
– And frost it accordingly and refrigerate it for sometime before serving

  • cup All purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp Corn flour White powder kinda flour
  • 1 tbsp Cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp Baking soda
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • ¼ cup Butter
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • ½ cup Oil any vegetable or sunflower oil
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
  • ¼ tsp Red food color I used gel food color if using liquid color then add 1 tbsp or more
  • ½ cup Buttermilk
  • ¾ tsp Vinegar

To make classic cream cheese frosting

  • 250 gms Cream cheese
  • ½ cup Butter
  • 2 cup Icing sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence

Notes

I used gel food coloring but you can use liquid food color
Baking soda cannot be substituted with baking powder in this recipe
Do not use brown sugar in this recipe as it may change the color of the cake
Do not skip buttermilk as it helps to activate the baking soda 
Use good quality cream cheese
