Golden milk is an infusion of either dry turmeric powder or fresh turmeric roots with milk. This is traditional drink prepared in many Indian household as a health drink or to treat a seasonal flu or cold.
I usually make Haldi milk with organic turmeric powder but this time i got fresh turmeric roots hence i made use of that. Turmeric has many health benefits, it has anti inflammatory properties. However im not use to this golden milk from my childhood days. I learned this recipe from my husband who is very used to it.
Few tips to make Fresh turmeric milk / golden milk
- If you are not able to source fresh turmeric roots then use organic turmeric powder
- If using turmeric powder add it at the end and switch of the flame
- You can also skip cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and use only turmeric and pepper
- Usually we don’t add any sweetener to golden milk hence i did not add any but you can add honey to it

To make turmeric milk– Firstly using motar and pestle pound the cardamom, cloves, pepper coarsely– Pour the milk in a sauce pan and over medium heat, add grated turmeric and mix well with spoon– Add coarsely pounded spices and add Cinnamon stick,– Add Grated ginger and allow it to simmer for 3-4 minutes– Stir frequently to avoid milk sticking to the bottom of the pan– Switch off the flame and let it sit for 5 minutesStrain the milk through a strainer– Serve it hot or warm you can also add honey while serving
Ingredients
To make turmeric milk
- 2 cups Milk
- 1 tbsp Turmeric root or 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 nos Cardamom
- 1 stick Cinnamon
- 2 Cloves
- ¼ tsp Pepper

To make turmeric milk
