Instant Tomato garlic rasam / How to make tomato rasam / Garlic rasam / Rasam with instant rasam powder recipe with detailed instruction and step by step photos. Rasam is a south Indian soup like dish made of tomato, tamarind, garlic, dal and other spices and herbs. It is staple dish in south indian cuisine especially in Tamil house holds. There are varieties of rasam like lemon rasam, tamarind rasam, pineapple rasam, paruppu ( dal) rasam and many but the common ingredients are tomato, cumin and pepper. Today i had shared simple tomato garlic rasam with instant rasam powder. It has the heavenly flavor of freshly ground rasam powder. Rasam has lots of medical values as it is simmered with many spices and herbs. You can serve rasam with hot plain white rice or you can serve it like a soup.

This Instant rasam recipe is simple and easy to make at home with basic ingredients. Each house hold has their own way of making rasam. My mom makes rasam daily and she makes the best rasam but however i dont make it daily basis. I just make rasam weekly once or twice for our lunch. As i said earlier there are many ways to make rasam, however the ingredients remain same and only the preparation may differ. Tomato, garlic, tamarind, hing(asafoetida) and cumin are the basic ingredients for any rasam.

Notes

I did not add dal to tomato rasam but if you want you can pressure cook 2 tbsp the dal and mash it and add it to the rasam

You can also make this rasam powder in bulk and store it in air tight container

To make rasam powder
– Heat a pan and dry roast all the ingredients for the rasam powder
– Once the spices cool down add it to a blender jar and blend it to coarse powder and set aside
To make Rasam
– Heat a kadai/ pan with oil and add mustard, cumin and red chili once it splutters add crushed garlic, curry leaves and asafeotida saute it
– Now add the chopped tomatoes and saute it for 2-3 minutes
– Add turmeric powder and mix well
– Add the diluted tamarind puree and cover and cook for 5 minutes
– Then add the ground rasam powder and water and mix well
– Let it boil for 5 minutes at medium to high flame
– Finally add coriander leaves and switch off the flame
– Serve it hot with rice, or serve it like soup

Ingredients
  

To make instant rasam powder

  • 1 tsp Toor dal
  • 1 tsp Coriander
  • 5-6 Methi seeds
  • 1 tsp Pepper corn
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin / Jeera
  • 7-8 Curry leaves
  • 2-3 pods Garlic
  • 1/4 tsp Asafeotida / hing

To make Tomato garlic rasam

  • 3 ripe tomatoes Tomato
  • 6-7 pods Garlic
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin / Jeera
  • 2 spring Curry leaves

Instructions
 

To make rasam powder

  • Heat a pan and dry roast all the ingredients for the rasam powder
  • Once the spices cool down add it to a blender jar and blend it to coarse powder and set aside

Notes

You can also use store bought rasam powder to make this rasam 
You can make this rasam powder in bulk and store in airtight container 
Use ripe tomatoes to make rasam
